Industrial Scissors Lifts
Glossary of Terms

Automatic Landing Gate;
A landing gate that automatically opens or closes, respectively, as a lift platform arrives at or departs from subject landing.

Authorized Person;
Trained or qualified personnel approved or assigned to perform a specific duty or duties.

Critical Components;
Those components whose absence or failure would cause the equipment, or which they are a part, to become inadequate or unsafe for its specific purposes.

Dock Lift;
A lift which is primarily used to load / unload material from trucks and transfer it to dock or ground elevation. (Note: A dock lift travel is generally 5 feet or less and must meet and/or exceed established safety protocols)

Ductile;
Describes material capable of sustaining not less than 5% elongation before it fractures.

End/Side Rollover Capacity;
The maximum amount of static load that can be applied to the edge of platform (end or side) when the lift is in any raised position.

Hinged Bridge or Lip;
A hinged transition plate that is attached to the edge of the platform and used to bridge the gap between the platform and landing and/or truck bed.

Hydraulic Piping System;
The entire systems of fluid conduits such as hose, pipe, tubing, etc., utilized to transfer hydraulic fluid between various operating components of a hydraulic system such as pumps, valves, actuators, etc.

Interlock;
A device to prevent lift movement when a landing agate is not fully closed and to prevent the landing gate from being opened unless the lift platform is present at that landing.

Landing;
A permanent-working surface at a fixed elevation used for loading/unloading a lift device.

Landing Gate;
A permanent-working control at the landing area, to assist personnel traffic during loading and/or unloading.

Lift Table;
A scissors lift device used to raise, lower, stack, convey and/or transfer material between two or more elevations and not limited to landing.

Lifting Capacity;
The rated load of a scissors lift applied as a uniformly distributed load. Operator: Trained person controlling the movement of the lift.

Pantograph Leg Section;
The articulated support mechanism characterized by a singe central pivot axis, and commonly referred to as the scissor leg assembly.

Platform Ends;
The edges of the platform that are perpendicular to the scissor legs. The end dimension is considered the platform width.

Platform Sides;
The edges of the platform that are parallel to the scissor legs. The side dimension is considered the platform length.

Pneumatic Piping System;
The entire system of pneumatic conduits such as hose, pipe, tubing, etc., utilized to transfer gas between various operating components of the pneumatic system such as pumps, valves, actuators, etc.

Qualified Person;
A person, who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate, professional standing, or skill, and who, by knowledge, training and experience, has demonstrated the ability to deal with problems relating to the subject matter, the work, or the project.

Rated Capacity;
The maximum load that can be applied according to the manufacturers specification.

Rated Load;
The maximum capacity as specified by the equipment nameplate.

Rollover Capacity;
The maximum amount of force applied from a single axle load that may be rolled over the platform surface when the lift is in its fully closed position. The two rollover capacities that clients should be aware of when considering loading dock lifts and lift tables for standard applications; end load and side load rollover capacities (Note: Manufacturers end load and side load rollover capacities may vary).

Safety Protocols;
Procedures established by governmental, institutional and manufacturers associations with the goal to diminish the risk of accidents, which establish requirements that enhance personnel safety and proper product operational usage.

Scissors Lift;
A raising/lowering device that is supported or stabilized by one or more pantograph leg section.

Strength Factor;
The materials ultimate strength ratio can be found from dynamic loading, this influences maximum rated capacity.

Trained Personnel;
Personnel who have been trained by a qualified instructor and have demonstrated understanding of the correct useage of equipment functions and the required operational safety duties that are necessary.

Vertical Creep;
Extremely slow speed movement of a scissors lift that is the result of normal, internal leakage of fluid control valves.

Vertical Travel;
The difference between the lowered height and the raised height of the platform deck.
